Hotwalls

Now shortlisted for 4 National and Regional Awards, ERMC Hampshire architects are very proud to have Hotwalls as a flagship project in our Heritage and Conservation portfolio.

Portsmouth City Council appointed ERMC as the Lead Designer and Contract Administrator for the regeneration of the 1850's artillery barracks and soldier quarters. A grant, received from the Government's Coastal Communities Fund, has provided the means to transform and revitalise this historic site in Old Portsmouth into a collection of 13 artist studios with proposed exhibition space in the 'Round Tower' and an adjoining eatery.

This project has realised sustainable rejuvenation of this renowned monument, enhancing its significance and securing its future management whilst culturally enriching the local area.

The project outcomes:

  • Enclosure and fit‐out of the arches and internal spaces to form artist’s workshops, brasserie, interpretation space/display area, management office, meeting room and storage facilities.

  • Relocation and re‐provision of the existing public conveniences including disabled person’s facility.

  • Improved ventilation to help dry out the structure of the Round Tower.

  • Improved associated infrastructure.

  • Improved external works and landscaping on the old Parade ground (including cycle parking).

  • The interpretation of the history of the site from the Tudor period to the 1960’s via illuminated displays in old gun openings.

"ERMC working with the City Council, Historic England and contractors, have successfully turned this Scheduled Ancient Monument and Listed Building into a thriving artists' and makers' quarter in the heart of Old Portsmouth.  The once semi-derelict and empty historic casemates have been transformed into sustainable working studios, a popular café, and a destination point for visitors whilst sympathetically maintaining the historic character of the buildings and setting. We are very pleased with the result." Vernon Nash, Portsmouth City Council

"Working with ERMC proved to be a rewarding experience for Mountjoy and a project we are proud to be associated with. As the contractor working on such a sensitive and challenging project, the ERMC team promoted a collaborative approach to problem solving and one of teamwork in order to deliver to such high standards whilst maintaining buildability. The end product is testament to ERMC’s professionalism both in design and project management." Andy Flambard, Mountjoy
