Sandham Gardens
Regeneration of Sandown Bay
Heritage GB have entered into a leasehold agreement with Isle of Wight and Sandown Town Councils to take over the management of Sandham Park (other than the Bowls Club, the free children’s playground areas and the Bandstand) for the next 50 years. This will include seasonal maintenance, such as grass cutting, tending flowering beds, clearing litter etc. to investing in major attractions to kick start the regeneration of Sandown Bay.
Rainey Petrie Architecture are proud to have been key players in achieving detail planning permissions for all these items and in their on-going relationship with one of the key providers of Leisure Attractions in the UK.
Park facilities
Heritage GB have also invested in key Park facilities in their first financial year, in the refurbishment of the toilet block and refreshment kiosk and improved drainage in addition to their regular maintenance regime.
Heritage GB have invested upwards of £1.5m thus far in their new Go-Kart Racing Track, new Dino Adventure Crazy Golf Course, new Beach Huts, new High Nets Palace and in improving general maintenance of the Park, its facilities and general safety of the public.
Park History
Sandham Gardens was established as a Public Park and Recreation Ground in the early 1920’s and formally opened on 13th June 1924. Sandown Town Council had decided that there was a need for outdoor recreational facilities, for both visitors and their local community, to compete with those recently offered by Shanklin.
Since its opening the site has provided many facilities including a bandstand and pavilion, tennis courts, ladies and gents changing rooms, bowling green, children’s play areas, a café, toilets, a miniature railway, skateboard park, 5-a-side football pitch and outdoor gym.
This project has now increased the activities and facilities available at the park to ensure its ongoing success into the future.
