UKSA Accommodation

Contemporary Spaces

UKSA have developed a new 136-bed accommodation centre on their site in Cowes, Isle of Wight. ERMC were appointed for Project Management and Cost Consultancy services to see the scheme from planning to completion. ERMC are pleased to support UKSA in this exciting expansion and in particular the opportunity to deliver a fresh and contemporary place to stay.

The scheme proposed the demolition of two existing structures: the Ark Royal building and a temporary office building. These were replaced by a new L shaped block which rationalises uses on the site and passively improves site movement and security. The construction works were completed in Spring 2022. During construction the remainder of the UKSA site remained operational.

Adaptable accommodation

The proposed individual rooms were designed to be adaptable and can accommodate from 1 to 4 people within each room to meet requirements of teachers, students, and other events such as Cowes week.

One larger version of this room has been provided for flexible disabled use on first floor. The adaptability is achieved through the use of pull-down beds and through
fixed units which offer both storage and privacy between beds.

Accessibility and security

The flexibility of the room fit-out and the entire building (split strategically into secure ‘zones’) enables the site to accommodate a wider range of group sizes and visitor types.

It enables a previously non-existent accessible route for disabled users internally to all levels. The new reception directly off the site access rationalises wayfinding, security and offers a new street presence from Arctic Road and from the water.
